How was I nominated?
For the Google Developer Groups ecosystem since 2024 the next lead is nominated by a 2 level interview process.
- The present lead would be sending out an inviation nominee for the next lead.
- Following which the potential candidates are all requested to fill up a form based response system as the first level progress.
- Following this the second level progress has a video based resume, where in you have to answer some tightly rigorous questions.
- Some of the queststions which I still remember:-
- What is the biggest shortcomming of the campus you want to bridge?
- What are the best experiences of community development which you have shown?
- What would you do if you watch your own core team fight for a cause?
- Once these are answered we basically get a window of about 1 - 2 months when from the time when the evaluation starts. Slowly over the time someday down the time line at about the final report had come with an email that I have been shortlisted as the GDGoC for the class of 2025-26.
Some catches of my tenure from 25-26!
Throughout my entire tenure I had a chance to host 19 individual events with over 5 unique individual speakers!
I am really glad for some specific events which had taken place on my campus:-
- Hacktoberfest Meetup with over 290 participants
- Community Meetup with CNCF Hooghly ft. Hrittik Roy and Abhishek Kushwaha
- 2x Hackathons ft. Codesprint (internal SIH selection Round) & ft. Techsprint (Google powered 2025-26 2 months long hackathon)
- Powering
Google Study Jams2025-26 with official Google Swags and a lot of fun!
- Cross communiuty Tech Talk events with GDGoC BBIT AOT TMSL GNIT GCECT NSEC
- Giving away 100+ Google Swags to Participants
- 90 for Google Study Jams
- 12 for Techsprint 2025-26
Some learnings that I've got from the tenure
While being a GDGoC, I've interacted with a lot of people, including faculties, students and authorities. Not everytime it was a sweet one.
One day pre-event suddenly I had heard that the room got shifted, the one which we had booked / PR-ed for isn't available anymore. With over 200 participants in hand it becomes difficult in such situations to shift them to a new housing smoothly! Sometimes, due to miscommunication with faculties, we had trouble getting food / room availability up, although I can proudly say that my team had done almost 100% of the effort in handling these but still we had a hard time musings of a Tier-3 university 🙂
Gradually over the time as we moved forward I got immense help from my peers worth mentioning and in house.
The team is never meant to be perfect, everyone has their own understandings and some are really ignorant of responsibilities. For my tenure, I had a huge core team (18 members + 1 me) and that's a LOT. Why did I do this? -- Well you can say 90% for the numbers and 10% because I actually needed it. Our chapter is NEW and we are in our 3rd year. In such a time having a team collaborative makes a big mark in such universities.
But anyways, apart from all the learnings, it was a huge character development for me, I really wanted to face individuals / communities / technology / ideas & most importantly help the ones who actually need help, and this gave me the right oppurtuinity.
What do I see in-front of me?
I belong from a Tier-3 University, but GDG Community is HUGE! To be actually able to map the potential of this community to the scale, we would need better co-operation. My university doesn't operate any more clubs, we are a single standalone at the moment. With this in hand if we don't really recognise GDG as an intricate part of the CSE Department it's a fatal mistake.
We are not just bound to B.Tech we welcome everyone may it be B.Sc or BCA or MCA irrespective of the degree you pursue. The university needs innitiatives to spread and communally recogise GDG as an internal community to the dept.
I am really excited to see GDG advance forwards with the next lead. I have been a mamber first, core member next and a lead after that. Overall 3 years of attachment with GDG and now I am looking forward to someone who would take over from me! Thank you for coming so far in the blog! I believe in the community and I believe in the persistence of it! GDG is by us and for us always ❤️
